Tanker boarded south of Trelleborg – suspected violation of maritime law

Boarding Jin Hui may 3

Boarding of Jin Hui may 3rd

The Swedish Coast Guard, together with Swedish Police, has boarded the Jin Hui, a tanker sailing under a suspected false flag. A preliminary investigation is underway. The vessel is suspected of being in violation of maritime law due to a lack of seaworthiness.

– Ships with suspected deficiencies in their seaworthiness continue to sail in Swedish waters. This is not acceptable. We have intervened before, now we are intervening again, says Daniel Stenling, Deputy Chief of Operations at the Swedish Coast Guard.

Today's intervention is the fifth in a row, the third where seaworthiness is in focus, and needs to be investigated.

The tanker Jin Hui was boarded at 2 pm on Sunday afternoon while sailing into the Baltic Sea. The Swedish Coast Guard has been following the syrian flagged vessel, which is 182 meters. The ship is probably unladen. Its destination is unclear.

There are several indicators that make the ship interesting, for example, it is on several sanctions lists, including the EU and the UK. The Swedish Coast Guard suspects that the vessel is falsely flagged, as there are a number of uncertainties regarding the vessel's flag status, and that it therefore does not meet the requirements for seaworthiness as set out in international regulations and agreements.

The boarding was carried out in collaboration with the Swedish Police and proceeded calmly, according to plan. Personnel from the Swedish Coast Guard are now on board the Jin Hui conducting an investigation.

In cases like this, the Swedish Coast Guard may order the vessel in question to anchor in Swedish territorial waters. The designated anchorage for Jin Hui is south of Trelleborg.
