Unsuccessful dives for oil in Pukaviksbukten

As part of an exercise, Swedish Coast Guard divers have dived the seabed in Pukaviksbukten in search of any oil that may have sunk after the Marco Polo ran aground. No oil has been found so far.

Divers from KBV 003 Amfitrite have dived the site on three occasions. The sites dived were selected on the basis of information received about suspected oil deposits. Some sites were assigned by Blekinge County Administrative Board. Visibility below the surface has varied from good to non-existent.

No oil has been found. The Coast Guard is not ruling out further dives at present.

The oil that escaped from the Marco Polo was of a type that sinks below the surface, can drift with currents or completely sink to the bottom, under certain circumstances. It is possible that the oil will rise to the surface or reach land as the temperature in the sea rises. Any oil deposits must be reported to the municipality concerned and the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management.
