Total defence

The Coast Guard is an emergency response agency and part of Sweden’s total defense. In the event of war or heightened alert, we support the Swedish Armed Forces, protect the civilian population, and help ensure that critical societal functions continue to operate.

Support for civil defence

Civil defence covers the capability of the whole of society to protect the population and maintain important societal functions when there is a threat of war and during war. The Coast Guard is part of the civil defence system. Through its presence at sea, rescue services and maritime surveillance, it contributes to Sweden's overall resilience.

Support to the military defence

The Swedish Coast Guard has an important role in total defence and must be able to support the Swedish Armed Forces during heightened preparedness and war. Through planning, exercises and improved cooperation, the agencies strengthen their ability to act together and to use the Coast Guard's resources where they are needed.

Hybrid threats and the grey zone

Threats to Sweden can take many forms, even between peace and war. Through disinformation, cyber attacks and activities at sea, actors can try to influence and destabilise society. The Swedish Coast Guard works to detect and counter these threats and to strengthen Sweden's preparedness, both on its own and in cooperation with other actors.

Crisis preparedness and resilience

To maintain critical societal activities even during serious disruptions and crises, the Swedish Coast Guard needs good preparedness and the ability to adapt. Through continuity work, robust solutions and regular exercises, we strengthen our ability to withstand threats, adapt our operations and keep functioning in different situations.

The Swedish Coast Guard and NATO

Sweden's membership of NATO creates new conditions for Sweden's security and total defence work. The Swedish Coast Guard is part of Swedish total defence and, through its activities, contributes to Sweden's commitments within NATO. This includes civil preparedness, cooperation and strengthening the ability to protect important societal functions and Swedish critical infrastructure.
