The sea as your workplace
As a Coast Guard Member, the sea is your workplace. You need to use your skills to make a real difference to people's safety and to the marine environment, every day. The sea offers a unique combination of magnificent nature and unpredictable conditions. It can be a harsh and demanding environment, but also a beautiful and inspiring one.
My job covers everything from keeping the sea clean to helping and being there for the people who spend time in the archipelago.
Johanna, Coast Guard Member
The work varies from rescue missions and oil spill response to maritime surveillance and crime prevention assignments. It demands good judgement, teamwork and the ability to act quickly when the situation changes. It also gives you the chance to work close to nature and to experience the sea in a way few others do.

Their work is seldom visible from the outside, but it is essential for the Coast Guard to carry out its mission efficiently and well.

Frequently asked questions
To work as a Coast Guard Member, you must have completed the Coast Guard's basic training.
You apply for a place on the basic training by sending in your application through the current recruitment advertisement, when one is published.
Before a new recruitment round starts, information is published here on Kustbevakningen.se. The advertisement is also published by the Swedish Public Employment Service and through the recruitment tool Varbi. The next recruitment period is planned for spring 2027.
The next application period for the Coast Guard's basic training is planned for spring 2027. The training starts in August.
While you study the basic training, you are classed as a Coastguard Trainee and earn 29635 kronor per month. After graduation, if you have completed the training with a pass, you are offered a permanent position as a Coastguardsman. You then earn at least 34060 kronor per month as an individual salary (revision autumn 2026).
The Coast Guard pays for the training, so we do not train more people than we intend to employ. To get a permanent position after the training, the trainee must pass all parts of the theoretical training and be assessed as suitable as an officer during the training and work placement.
A work placement on one of the Coast Guard's vessels is part of the basic training.
Apart from that, we unfortunately cannot take on interns in our operational work.
The Coast Guard takes part in missions abroad and international operations. Your employment therefore includes an obligation to serve abroad when the work requires it. As a Coast Guard Member, you can also choose to apply for longer postings abroad as part of our work for Frontex, but this is not compulsory.
