The needs in Ukraine are great, and the capacity and resilience of civil society are of decisive importance. Supporting Ukraine is one of the Coast Guard's priority areas.

Donations and training

As part of this cooperation, the Coast Guard donates equipment that we no longer use ourselves but that is needed in Ukraine. So far, we have donated vehicles, jet skis, diving equipment, personal protective equipment, work boats and engines, among other things. Where possible, we also buy equipment that we do not have ourselves but that is needed. The Coast Guard continually looks into the possibility of providing further equipment that Ukraine asks for, or checks whether another authority in Sweden can help.

The assignment also means that we work with the Ukrainian coast guard, the Maritime Guard. The assignment is long term and has several parts, such as training, workshops and exchange of experience. Among other things, we have held training courses and seminars for Ukrainian staff, in close cooperation with representatives from the European Union Advisory Mission Ukraine (EUAM) and the Swedish Agency for Civil Defence. These have taken place both in Sweden and on site in Ukraine. The work covers training in practical coast guard work. It also supports Ukraine's development towards closer ties with Europe as a member state.

Lessons from Ukraine

Our cooperation with Ukraine also gives Sweden and the Coast Guard very important knowledge and insights. We learn what the situation is like in another part of Europe, given the conditions that Ukrainian society has to operate under during war. We also learn what the Coast Guard needs in order to be better prepared if a similar situation were to arise.

All work with Ukraine is funded by special funds that the Coast Guard receives through the so-called the Ukraine Plan in the central government budget.
