Maritime search and rescue
When an accident happens at sea, the first priority of the Coast Guard is always to save human lives. We are on high alert around the clock so that we can respond quickly to maritime search and rescue operations along the coast of Sweden and on its largest lakes.

How the Swedish Coast Guard works during a maritime search and rescue operation
All maritime search and rescue services are led by Response Commanders (RC) at the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC). The JRCC is located in the same place as the Coast Guard's control centre and Maritime Surveillance in Gothenburg. This gives short response times and effective coordination.
The nearest suitable and available unit is sent on this type of mission. In a maritime search and rescue operation, time is one of the most important factors. Getting to the scene quickly, locating people in distress and rescuing them is the highest priority.
Our aircraft are a vital resource in maritime search and rescue. They are used, for example, to:
- Search for missing people over large areas at sea.
- Mark positions and drop life rafts to people in distress.
- Coordinate helicopter operations from the air.
The Coast Guard is an important resource for Sweden's national rescue services preparedness. We work closely together during operations with the Swedish Maritime Administration, the Swedish Sea Rescue Society (SSRS), the Swedish Police Authority and the Swedish Armed Forces.
Main responsibility: The Swedish Maritime Administration has overall government responsibility for maritime search and rescue services in Sweden.
Control centre: The JRCC (Joint Rescue Coordination Centre) leads and coordinates all operations.
Cooperating parties: The Coast Guard, the Swedish Sea Rescue Society, SSRS, the Swedish Police Authority and the Swedish Armed Forces all contribute boats, helicopters, aircraft and personnel.
