Our operations must help ensure that future generations can enjoy the marine environment in the same way as today. We do this by working to prevent and combat harmful discharges from shipping, and by controlling and monitoring the fishing industry.

The Coast Guard also carries out other environmental monitoring and controls the cargo transported by vessels. In this way, the Coast Guard helps to achieve four environmental quality objectives more fully:

  • A Balanced Marine Environment, Flourishing Coastal Areas and Archipelagos
  • A Rich Diversity of Plant and Animal Life
  • A Non-Toxic Environment
  • Thriving Wetlands.

Unfortunately, the Coast Guard's operations also have a negative impact on the climate and the environment because of our operational activities. We have premises and operations along Sweden's entire coast that use energy and natural resources. Our fleets of vessels, aircraft and vehicles use large amounts of fossil fuel and need a lot of maintenance.

Every day we work to minimise the agency's negative impact, for example by reducing the use of natural resources, travelling more sustainably and reducing carbon dioxide emissions from the use of fossil fuels.
