Re-use of documents
Here you can find information on how to request public documents from the Swedish Coast Guard and what applies if you want to re-use the information. The rules differ depending on whether you want to access a document or use information from it for a new purpose.
Questions and answers about re-use of Coast Guard documents
If you want to access a specific public document held by the Coast Guard (for example a report, a decision or a logbook), you do not need to use the rules on re-use. Under the principle of public access to official records, you have the right to request and read public documents impartially and anonymously, as long as they are not covered by secrecy.
How to do it: Send your request directly to our registrar at registrator@kustbevakningen.se. It is free to access documents digitally, but if you want paper copies, a fee is charged under the Fees Ordinance.
Act on the re-use of documents from public administration (Lag (2010:566) om vidareutnyttjande av handlingar från den offentliga förvaltningen), known as the PSI Act, regulates how companies and citizens may use information from public authorities as raw material for entirely new purposes.
The PSI Act therefore does not give an increased right to obtain secret documents and cannot be used to demand that the Coast Guard disclose information. Disclosure is always governed first and foremost by the Freedom of the Press Act, the Public Access to Information and Secrecy Act and applicable data protection rules. Documents that are subject to secrecy are not covered by the Act.
A large part of the Coast Guard's documents contain personal data of a more or less sensitive nature, for example information about people who appear in our control and supervision activities, law enforcement activities or other operational activities. Many documents are also covered by secrecy and therefore cannot be disclosed. Disclosure for re-use must take place in accordance with applicable data protection rules. This is why each document must be assessed each time it is disclosed.
Under section 11 of the PSI Act, authorities must publish a list of the types of documents that can usually be made available electronically for re-use. Most of the Coast Guard's material requires an individual assessment of secrecy and data protection. For this reason, the Coast Guard does not provide a general list of datasets that can be disclosed. The documents that can be freely re-used without prior assessment are the open publications, reports and regulations that are already published on the website.
The Coast Guard only charges a fee under the Fees Ordinance.
