Sharp reduction in carbon dioxide emissions at sea
Despite an increase in total fuel consumption, the Swedish Coast Guard has cut its carbon dioxide emissions by almost 30% over the past year. It did this by replacing fossil diesel with the renewable biofuel HVO100 for its internal vessel fleet.

- Fuel consumption at sea is a complex issue, because it is governed by the operational needs of our work. For example, if a mission is urgent, we need to increase speed, and then fuel consumption goes up. That is why the switch to renewable biofuel is such an effective measure, says Susanna Svensson, environmental analyst at the Swedish Coast Guard.
The change means a reduction in emissions of 3162 tonnes of carbon dioxide. This is equivalent to more than 400 car journeys around the world in a diesel car.
The biofuel is produced from organic material, such as residues from forestry or food waste. It is a key part of closing the cycle, as it does not add new carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
- Another major benefit of biofuel is that it produces fewer harmful particles and contains no carcinogenic aromatics. This gives the crew a considerably better working environment than when using conventional fuel, says Susanna.
She says there are also benefits related to total defence and crisis preparedness.
- HVO100 also strengthens Sweden's self-sufficiency, as we can convert domestic residual products from the forestry industry into a fossil-free fuel. This reduces our dependence on imported crude oil.
Good results, but more options need to be reviewed in the longer term
Although there are many benefits, long-term use is limited, both in terms of budget funds and in terms of the availability of fuel in the large quantities required.
- We need to keep exploring more ways to reduce our footprint over time. Even though biofuels give us a big gain here and now, it remains important going forward to focus on energy efficiency, control and training, to make our operations more future-proof.
The opportunity to apply for funds can ska
pa room going forward
In the government's spring amending budget, a new appropriation of SEK 500 million is introduced for fossil-free fuels and electrification.
- For us, this probably means an upcoming opportunity to apply for funds to cover the additional costs of buying HVO100 for our vessels in 2026 as well.
