Maritime traffic monitoring
We at the Swedish Coast Guard care about everyone being able to stay at sea safely. To reduce the number of accidents and create a safe marine environment, we carry out maritime traffic monitoring along the coasts and in the archipelagos. The efforts focus mainly on sailing under the influence of alcohol, speeding offences, negligence at sea and lantern offences.

Vessel traffic is busiest during the summer months. During this period, surveillance along the coasts and in the archipelagos is therefore increased to reduce the number of accidents and create a safe environment for everyone at sea. The efforts focus mainly on sailing under the influence of alcohol, speeding offences, negligence and lantern offences. As well as checking sobriety and making sure that maritime traffic rules are followed, the Swedish Coast Guard also makes sure that the rules on closed water areas are respected.
Maritime traffic monitoring includes checking:
- that applicable speed limits are not exceeded
- that good seamanship is observed
- that maritime traffic rules are followed
- sobriety on board
- that closed water areas are not entered
- that rules in traffic separation areas at sea are followed.
