Questions and answers about the processing of personal data
Personal data is any information that can be linked, directly or indirectly, to a living person, such as a name, photo or personal identity number. Sensitive data has stronger protection. Processing personal data means in principle everything that is done with it, from collection and registration to storage. You can find more information and explanations of terms at imy.se.
The Coast Guard mainly processes personal data in order to carry out our core tasks in rescue missions at sea and maritime surveillance, but also for personnel administration. We only collect necessary data, such as name, email address and telephone number, to fulfil our mission and to comply with laws on registration of documents and archiving. The data is never stored longer than necessary and is deleted in accordance with applicable archiving rules.
For our regular exercise of public authority, we rely on the legal basis of public interest or legal obligation, which is regulated in the Coast Guard Data Act. For personnel administration, we use the basis of contract. In a few cases, such as newsletter subscriptions, we rely on consent. When we process data for law enforcement purposes, to prevent, investigate or prosecute crime, the processing is instead governed by the Crime Data Act.
Only employees who need the data in their work have access to it. For sensitive information, we always carry out an extra protection assessment. External suppliers are bound by strict instructions through data processing agreements. We also share data with cooperating agencies, municipalities and international partners after a special assessment. Because we are a government agency, personal data may also be disclosed under the principle of public access to official records, provided that it is not covered by secrecy.
