Since 1 August 2022, the Swedish Enforcement Authority (Kronofogden) has been able to request assistance from the Swedish Police Authority with distraint. From 1 July 2026, the Swedish Enforcement Authority can also request assistance from the Coast Guard, Swedish Customs and the Swedish Economic Crime Authority with remote distraint.

– We know from experience that distraint produces results at sea too. Together with the Swedish Enforcement Authority, we have on some occasions been able to seize boats and other property. Now that we can do this remotely, it increases efficiency. Sweden does not end at the beach, says Jessika Janse, acting head of the operational command unit at the Coast Guard.

Last year, assets valued at almost 117 million kronor were seized remotely. When more authorities work together, it is possible to reach even more of those who can pay their debts but do not want to.

– That more authorities now have this possibility means that we find more assets that we would otherwise have had difficulty seizing. It means both that we can counter criminal finances more forcefully, and that more debts, many of them owed to crime victims or to the state, will be paid, says Cecilia Hegethorn Mogensen, acting Head of the Swedish Enforcement Authority (Rikskronofogde).
