KBV 181 is equipped with an oil trawl for cleaning large areas of the sea surface, as well as equipment for firefighting and emergency towage. It is also used for marine research in cooperation with the Umeå Marine Sciences Centre and The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI). For this, it has its own laboratory and automatic measuring systems on board.

The combination vessel KBV 181 is based on the Finnish Border Guard's offshore patrol vessels Tursas and Uisko. The vessel has a high ice class. It is stationed in Umeå for pollution response in an Arctic environment.
