Do you dream of meaningful work at sea?
Published: 31 Mar 2026 at 3:53 PM

As a coast guard officer, you help to protect Sweden's coasts and largest lakes. You also contribute to society's crisis preparedness in the maritime environment. We are looking for people who want to make a difference and create a safer, cleaner and more secure environment at sea.
A varied profession with the sea as your workplace
From rescue operations and oil spill response to maritime surveillance and crime prevention assignments, every day brings new challenges. You often work in a team for several days at a time. You need to be able to act quickly and stay calm in critical situations. A sometimes hectic pace alternates with periods of more routine work.
The first step is the basic training
To become a coast guard officer, you must complete the Coast Guard's basic training, where theory meets practice and prepares you for life at sea. You receive a salary during the training. After you have completed and passed the training, your employment becomes a permanent position at one of our coast stations along Sweden's coast.
The need for personnel in external operational activities is great. The basic training is therefore now being shortened by one term, so that more people can start operational service in less time. During the basic training, all trainees study Vessel Officer VII (Fartygsbefäl VII). Engineer Officer VII (Maskinbefäl VII) is given later to those who need it for their post. \u00A0
